July on a Bike

OVER 2,600 MILES, and DONE

You think you know someone, so you go across the country with them, you build memories, and one day all you have is memories that numb our bodies when they come to mind. So, memories, photos and songs is all we have:

"Racing shadows in the moonlight
Through the desert on a hot night
And for a second there we'd won
Yeah, we were innocent and young"

"I want to bike across the country."
"What do you mean?"
"I want to go across the United States, from coast to coast, on a bicycle."
"You mean on a motorcycle, but you don't own a motorcycle."
"No, I don't want to go on a motorcycle, I want to ride my bicycle."
"You're crazy; you can't ride a bicycle across the country."
"Maybe, but you're crazy too."
"Why are you doing this?"
"I don't know anyone who has tried this, and I think I can do it, I think. I think it's possible."
"Do you know how long it would take? You don't have the time, what about your job. It would probably cost a lot. You haven't got any money. You don't ride bikes that much; you're not fit enough. And, I bet it takes a lot of planning, and you can't bike on highways."

"I thought about some of these things. I have time; my job contract ends at the end of May, I don't have to start work again until late July, and I don't think I'll renew my contract. So, I've applied to grad school, and If I'm accepted I won't have to be back until mid August. I haven't planned out how to do this yet,  but I have some money saved up, and I have the time. Besides, I think I can get some attention and in turn I'd like to raise awareness for a non-profit, CMTA. However I end up doing this, I want to keep a record of it, and share it with anyone who will listen. I'm putting together a donation page for CMTA. I'm not going by myself either; My girlfriend is joining me. We plan on camping the whole way. I guess we'll be homeless for few months, so it shouldn't cost that much. but that means we'll have to carry all of our stuff the whole way. I'm putting together a blog, to jot down everything that I do, I'll try to post something everyday. I think it's doable. i hope that when someone comes on here they'll share the link, at least the CMTA page. I'll also leave the links active, after I finish the trip, (if we finish the trip) so that donations can be made to CMTA, and if every now and then they get some funding, than this will have been worth it."

Hello friends and hello family. Thanks for stopping by. I'm spending July on a Bike. Here, you can follow me on my mission to bike across the the country and raise awareness about CMT and to raise funds.

About July on a Bike

The PLAN:

Go from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean on a bicycle within two months.

I'm not doing this alone, Kayla will be joining me the whole way.

It all starts on June 15, 2012. On Friday, I will fly to San Francisco where, hopefully, I will reunite with my bike and it will be ready to be ridden. Three days later, after final preparations, we will take off from the Pacific Ocean and traverse the country from coast to coast in two months-part of June, part of August and all of July. I will spend two months on a bicycle and ride over 4000 miles-averaging over 60 miles per day.

We will have bicycles loaded with gear and we will be camping along the way.

The DETOUR:

After crossing desert, after climbing the Rockies, and after reaching Kansas, I will take a left turn that will take me north to Michigan, and maybe Canada. This will add significant mileage to the trip.

The DESTINATION:

  • The Atlantic.

About Me

My name is Julio. I am 24, and I am riding a bicycle across the country from approximately June 18 to August 20

We are following the red line I marked. We took this map from the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA). we bought some expensive detailed maps from them. Since they were so expensive, we only purchased half of our route. The last half of that red line is tentative, so we are are not sure if that will be our exact path.

I've started a Donate-a-Snickers-to-Julio campaign.
