Almost started

June 19, 2012
REI ended up rebuilding our bikes. They were able to do it by Monday.
We had spent the weekend going to Stanford, watching graduation ceremonies, oh and we also went to the Golden gate bridge. The bridge would be where our trip would begin. It was kind of a pretty nice sight.

Stanfor was hot and San Francisco was chilly, the difference took me by surprise, and I realized the start of our ride would be uncomfortably cold; I didn't bring very warm clothes.

We said bye to Stanford on Sunday-after watching my sister's lengthy graduation ceremonies (CONGRATULATIONS SIS, I'm proud of you)- and, we headed to REI to pick up our bikes.

And we were ready to begin the next morning... we thought.

Things go wrong most of the time pt 2
June 17, 2012

Plane lands. Stop at Golden Gate Bridge. Phone rings. I dont hear it. I check the time. Four thirty. I have a missed call. The number, 650. I google the area code. Its california. It must be the bike shop. A voicemail appears.  It's them. "Hi, this is...REI in San Carlos. Just wanted to let you know we got your bike in here, it was shipped to us in San Carlos. If you want us to assemble it, it is 25 dollars. If you want to let us know". 25 d...

Things go wrong, most of the time

Two days before flying to California, I decided to take go for a long bike ride. While climbing a steep hill, I felt something snap in my bike. It did not end well. I had to walk home as I pulled the bike the whole way back.

This, is a busted derailleur. I don't know how it happened, but it did. The thing may as well have exploded, because it was left useless. the cage was completely bent, and the idler pulley was torn to pieces.

Fortunately, if we live through ...

Training Trails

Leading up to our trip we gave ourselves two months to train. Right now, I wish it would’ve been more. In those two months we covered about 300 miles. During that time, Denver proved to have some decent areas for cyclists. From our rides, my favorite was a one to White Ranch Park. We took the Cherry Creek Path to Confluence Park where we veered off the path and took side streets to 51st and Harlan where we found the Clear Creek Trail. That, led us the Golden Gate Road, an...

Step 1: Buying a bike

June 8, 2012
April 7, 2012

I went to a couple of bike shops. I needed a touring bike. Touring bikes are made to travel long distances, and they can handle heavy loads. Also, they can be accessorized with a back rack and front rack, which we needed to carry all our equipment.
After visiting a few bike shops, I learned three important things. Biking is an expensive sport. Bike stores don't tend to have touring bikes. I needed to go elsehwere. The shop employees kept recommending the Surly Long Haul , but hat...

January 2012

Kayla tells me she plans on going on a bike tour to raise money for CMTA. This intrigued me, I thought it a good deed, and I decided to do it as well.
