Austin to Eureka 6/29

July 4, 2012
Austin to Eureka

This was 70 miles. Started the day off with three miles of some of the steepest uphills we've seen. We quickly became tired and it was partly because of the sun blazing down on us. There was no shade anywhere. The scenery was the same we'd been seeing in Nevada.

When we arrived to Eureka we stopped at the first restaurant we saw. The food was not so good, don't go to the hotel restaurant. After we ate, we went to the grocery store to load up on gatorade but also snacks and junk food; we were still hungry. I think Kayla ate a large bag of cookies that night. I mainly bought fruit.  We went to the RV to camp and the owner told us he had neither showers nor bathrooms for us. He explained that we could stay free of charge. Free camground.

Cold Springs Station to Austin (6/28)

July 2, 2012

Cold springs Station to Austin, NV

I thought we were going to Texas. Turns out, Nevada ALSO has an Austin. We stopped and took pictures for a bit but after a while I noticed the monotony and haven't been taking as many. Also, i can't upload any until i get to a computer. What can i say, it's hot, we've been drinking a ton of water and a ton of gatorade. We're going through about 2 gallons of water each per day. I ate some melted snickers in the middle of the day- thank you, best Snicke...

Fallon to Cold Springs June 27

July 2, 2012
Kayla keeps talking about getting a "trail dog". I'm not sure what she means by this. I believe it would be hard, really hard to have a dog following us on this trip. She talks about it all the time, ALL the time. Sometimes i think that that is all she ever thinks about. I don't get it. Whenever we see a dog, I know she's thinking about taking it along on our trip.  At one point she mentioned a "trail cow". It may have been the heat. I think she may have thought that it would be a good idea t...

Things I've learned

July 2, 2012
Things i've learned.

Motorcyclists are very friendly- so far, a couple of bikers shared their food with us at a campsite in Shilling Springs, CA. Guys on motorcycles talk to us from time to time. Maybe they are surprised by our method of travel, they come off as friendly though. Also, pretty much every biker gives us a wave. Oh, and, we were also offered water by a biker on a hot day. He passed us, then rode back, pulled over, told us he had extra water, and offered it to us.

Nevada is one hug...

Carson City to Fallon (6/26)

Carson City to Fallon

June 26, 2012

We left Carson City to head to Fallon, NV.

(Not before grabbing some food, we've been eating a lot, especially Kayla, but especially me)

We got on highway 50, which is called the "loneliest road in America".

It could've been lonelier. I think I've seen lonelier highways, on tv. Looking at our maps, it looked like we'd be on it for the next week or so. Along the route, I decided to quit lugging my backpack on my back and instead, place it on the back of my bi...

We reached Nevada

June 28, 2012

I'm about to get started with day 11. Internet connection has been almost non-existent.

It took us a while to get out of California. We crossed mountains and went up to Carson pass at something like 8400 feet. To get there we deviated from our map. We reached a really good coffee/bakery shop- Sugar Lillie Bakery. There we tasted some amazing. It was a quaint little shop in El Dorado, California (one of many tiny towns). It was the most delicious brownie I have ever tasted. They sell some of t...

West Sacramento or GTA San Andreas

June 21, 2012

We ran into a man riding his bicycle, 10 miles from West Sacramento. He pulled a sqweaky trailer with his sqweaky bike and I was a bit concerned that his bike would collapse any second, 10 miles from West Sacramento. He asked us for directions, we couldn't help him. When he spoke, I noticed his one front tooth, and wondered what his story was, I didn't ask him though, for a second, I though that maybe I didn't really want to find out. He looked confused, and he then told us he'd instead just ...

People are nice

June 21, 2012
I just wanted to update you on the trip. It's been fun so far. We got off to a rough/late start. Oh, and I see what all the fuzz is about San Francisco's hills;they are so steep, it's a bit difficult to see how people can ride bikes, drive, or even walk in some of the area. We hit 9 miles day one, 37 day two, and 81 day 3. Water has been something like 1 gallon day one, gallon and a half day two, and two and a half day three(just for me). We stayed at hotels so far, except last night when a n...

Day one goes wrong

June 19, 2012
Day one goes wrong.

THE PLAN:
Leave hotel
Head to Bridge
Begin
45 miles to campsite

ACTUAL DAY ONE:
We leave the hotel.
40 meters later, We realize Kayla's back tire has a nail in it. We head to REI...negative progress. It gets fixed..we are running late. We head to the bridge, take the CALTRAIN (bad idea), we end up going through part of san Francisco that was not meant to be ridden by bike. Here's the stairs we had to climb to get out of the train station.

We bike through San Francisco city stre...
