DONNNNEEEEE 8/14Duck Puddle Campground (Almost Waldoboro) to Rockport/Camden, ME

WE"RE DONEEEEE!!!!!

I have been very ready to be done.

I'm thinking that today is our last day biking and it feels both, good and a bit sad. I'm tired so it'll be good to finally be done.

It's been good, I've enjoyed this, part of me wishes that I could make it last longer, like maybe I should jump into the ocean and just swim until I find Atlantis.

Anyway, we're done. well, not really. We have to get back home. I have a flight back on the 19th out of Boston, so I have to get there. I also ha...

8/13 Brunswick To Duck Puddle Campground(almost Waldoboro)

Kayla gets a flat part 7, I believe.

We were ready to take off for the morning (only a couple hours later than we had hoped) when we noticed that Kayla's bike was flat. We took some time to fix that and to clean up our bikes. Mine had been sounding and feeling different since the fall so some cleaning would be good.

There was a frog in the road. I saw it when I closed up on it. I was getting closer. Luckily, I did not hit it. One of the two of us was creeped out by the frog. The other picked ...

8/12 Fryeburg, ME To Brunswick

Posted by Julio Bonilla on Tuesday, August 14, 2012,
Determined. Yesterday, we only went some 40 miles. Today we wanted to cover eighty some miles. We found a shortcut which saved us 10 miles. We took 302 straight to Bridgton instead of taking 5 north to Lovell. What would've been the point of that,  I don't know. This map seems outdated.

The roads in Maine are decrepit, that is what the map said. They could be better, but they could also be better. I think the chosen routes are neither the most practical nor the best maintained. So, thank you ...

We were miserable. I mean, I was miserable, I believe Kayla was as well, but I can only say with certainty that I know I was. We woke up wet. Our tent was soaked, and most of our clothes were too. I managed to find one pair of dry socks and my running shoes were also dry, mostly. That, was the highlight of my morning, dry socks when all else was soaked.

We arrived at Conway where we stayed at the laundromat for a couple hours. Dry clothes. We only made it to Fryeburg. Me. Wee, we made it to Ma...

I fell off the bike

Ariving into New Hampshire was great. people seemed friendly and we had been given a low price for a good campsite. It rained the whole night before. IT POURED. Luckily, we had set up our tent under the campground shelter area, so we were dry. Luckily.

An adventurous hike welcomed us to New Hampshire by sharing some information; we would be crossing the Appalachian Trail the following day. That meant two things: We were crossing mountains again, and I don't know what else. T...

8/9 middlebury Gap to Orford, NH

Posted by Julio Bonilla on Tuesday, August 14, 2012,
It's cold now. We descended from the top of Middlebury Gap. It was a cold descent. We had camped at a closed ski resort. That, was amazing. We thought it was a national forest and it probably wasn't, but it was quiet, it was calm, it was nice. I'm enjoying my time in Vermont. Yesterday it was hot, but today it has been really chilly. We stopped in town for some well deserved coffee.

We were given an alternate route for today by one of the locals who stopped to speak to us. He suggested stay in...

8/8 Paradox to Middlebury Gap, Vermont

We woke up to the sound of a critter playing with our trash. Funny squirrel, couldn't open the bag. Trash 1, squirrel 0. Kayla laughed at said squirrel, "weaksauce, I could even open that trash." She said something like that. We stopped at Ticonderoga for Dunkin Donuts and library stuff.

We stopped at High Peaks Kitchen and we ate some good food, we watched some diving stuff because that was what was on at the tv at the restaurant. They had Wi-fi too. We don't get much of that out here. It's really green and pretty here. I ran over a caterpillar. Kayla ran over a frog. I "found" some apples, yum yum.

 WE ARE FINE.

We were 4 miles away from a campsite. The sky turned dark, and IT POURED RAIN. A tree fell because RAIN WAS POURING.
We were lazy at Booneville. We stayed there for like two hours, maybe if we hadn't done that we would have avoided the rain. Oh well, it was fun.

To Michigan

We were supposed to be on a train at 7:43 am. The train was delayed over  3 hours. We left Erin's apt. in the morning, and we biked, and we found Union station. There, we boxed our bikes.  many hours later we arrived in Chicago. Trains are so much faster than bikes, wow. I don't like trains though; they wouldn't let us take our bikes past Chicago to Grand Rapids so that was our last stop. We needed to pick up our bikes, we didn't know from where though. We somehow got our bikes b...

7/25 Topeka to Kansas City

Posted by Julio Bonilla on Friday, July 27, 2012,

I patched up my tire  with duct tape, electrical tape, and with sports tape. After the patchwork, we headed to a bike shop, hoping that my tire would hold up during the ride to the shop. The day before, I had felt lucky because even though my tire had a huge hole in it, my inner tube didn't rip, I rode on the tube for a bit and didn't get a flat. I only stopped riding because the hole eventually became large enough that the tube stuck out of the tire so much that it was hitting my brake.

So, w...

7/24 Ness City to Topeka

Today we started in Ness city, KS. We biked continuously from 330am to 730am to some other small town, Rush Center, KS. When we arrived to Rush Center, all we wanted was food and some rest. To ensure that we left early, we didn't eat breakfast, so we were very hungry.
When we arrived to Rush Center, we were extremely tired. I was just about falling asleep on my bicycle. The night before, we didn't get much sleep and it was an especially long and tiring day.  We had arrived at Ness City at 7pm...

So, we need to be in Michigan by this weekend. We are trying to make it to a wedding, and we have a long way to go. Right now, we are thinking that we can make it to Newton and catch a train from there. As long as we catch catch it on Thursday morning at the latest, we'll make it to Michigan. To make i...

We arrived at Eads and the next town would be too far. We biked 78 miles... Not bad. We ate some food pb&j and we found a pool. I tried to do some flips off the diving board, I was not very good and was shown up by some little kids. We camped at the park by the library

We ate a muffin and a smoothie and we tried to update our blogs at the library. Computer malfunctions made that impossible. However, I was able to add Google Latitude to my website. 7/20 cotopaxi to pueblo

Today we had 35 miles of climbing before our last big descent of 45 miles into Pueblo. We covered over 80 miles, 87 total for the day. That put us at our highest-mileage day. A couple of miles after we began our day we stumbled upon two miles of hard packed gravel road. That stuff makes it difficult to bike.

We were eager to make it to Pueblo early because Kayla's uncle, Stan, would be coming down to Pueblo from Boulder to have dinner with us. We had a long day ahead,...

Started the day with a mountain. It took us 3 hours to get to the top of monarch pass, 10 miles. We went on a gondola  that you can ride from the pass to the peak to gaze at Colorado's mountains. We spotted pike's peak.
Then, the descent from monarch's pass gave us 10 fast miles that we completed in 20 minutes.
Then, we went to cotopaxi. Along the way, we stopped at the Arkansas River, saw rafters.
The ride to Cotopaxi or K-pax, was windy and hot and we had l...

Planned to go up monarch pass today. Didnt make it. Called it a day when we reached the bottom of it. So, right before all the climbing we stopped.

Woke up to kayla's frantic scream. She looked scared to touch her bag, the one where we had our food. There was red fuzzy material around the opening and some rice-sized pieces of something that resembled a small animal's poo. I emptied the bag contents, no foreign visitor was there. We carries on to some long uphills.

It was a the day we would cross from Utah to Colorado. We made it.

We replaced her tube and got going again. When we arrived into town, we saw an open bike shop. Nick had just opened it up a few weeks earlier and he didn't have much items for sale. Hanksville to lake powell 7/11

Got up semi early-left before 7. Started the day with a thousand foot climb(nothing too bad). We decided that today will be a 50-mile day rather than a 130. There's a campground that has a gas station in fifty miles but we have to go a few miles off route. Yeah that 130 stretch would've been hot and uphill, nearly impossible.

Leaving Panguitch was not easy. Kayla's bike tire  was flat when i was ready to go. We tried to buy a tube but the town didn't have any that would fit. We patched and then it would go flat again. After a few times of that we managed to leave town. The patch held....For like 15 miles. We resorted to forcing MY oversized thorn resistant spare tube into Kayla's small tires. In desperation we managed to force them in.

Motorcyclists are very friendly- so far, a couple of bikers shared their food with us at a campsite in Shilling Springs, CA. Guys on motorcycles talk to us from time to time. Maybe they are surprised by our method of travel, they come off as friendly though. Also, pretty much every biker gives us a wave. Oh, and, we were also offered water by a biker on a hot day. Day one goes wrong.

THE PLAN:
Leave hotel
Head to Bridge
Begin
45 miles to campsite

ACTUAL DAY ONE:
We leave the hotel.
40 meters later, We realize Kayla's back tire has a nail in it. We head to REI...negative progress. It gets fixed..we are running late. We head to the bridge, take the CALTRAIN (bad idea), we end up going through part of san Francisco that was not meant to be ridden by bike. Here's the stairs we had to climb to get out of the train station.

We bike through San Francisco city stre...

Almost started

REI ended up rebuilding our bikes. They were able to do it by Monday.
We had spent the weekend going to Stanford, watching graduation ceremonies, oh and we also went to the Golden gate bridge. The bridge would be where our trip would begin. It was kind of a pretty nice sight.

Stanfor was hot and San Francisco was chilly, the difference took me by surprise, and I realized the start of our ride would be uncomfortably cold; I didn't bring very warm clothes.

We said bye to Stanford on Sunday-afte...

Things go wrong most of the time pt 2
June 17, 2012

Plane lands. Stop at Golden Gate Bridge. Phone rings. I dont hear it. I check the time. Four thirty. I have a missed call. The number, 650. I google the area code. Its california. It must be the bike shop. A voicemail appears.  It's them. "Hi, this is...REI in San Carlos. Just wanted to let you know we got your bike in here, it was shipped to us in San Carlos. If you want us to assemble it, it is 25 dollars. If you want to let us know". 25 d...

Things go wrong, most of the time

Two days before flying to California, I decided to take go for a long bike ride. While climbing a steep hill, I felt something snap in my bike. It did not end well. I had to walk home as I pulled the bike the whole way back.

This, is a busted derailleur. I don't know how it happened, but it did. The thing may as well have exploded, because it was left useless. the cage was completely bent, and the idler pulley was torn to pieces.

Fortunately, if we live through ...

Training Trails

Leading up to our trip we gave ourselves two months to train. Right now, I wish it would’ve been more. In those two months we covered about 300 miles. During that time, Denver proved to have some decent areas for cyclists. From our rides, my favorite was a one to White Ranch Park. We took the Cherry Creek Path to Confluence Park where we veered off the path and took side streets to 51st and Harlan where we found the Clear Creek Trail. That, led us the Golden Gate Road, an...

Step 1: Buying a bike

Posted by Julio Bonilla on Friday, June 8, 2012,
April 7, 2012

I went to a couple of bike shops. I needed a touring bike. Touring bikes are made to travel long distances, and they can handle heavy loads. Also, they can be accessorized with a back rack and front rack, which we needed to carry all our equipment.
After visiting a few bike shops, I learned three important things. Biking is an expensive sport. Bike stores don't tend to have touring bikes. I needed to go elsehwere. The shop employees kept recommending the Surly Long Haul , but hat...

January 2012

Kayla tells me she plans on going on a bike tour to raise money for CMTA. This intrigued me, I thought it a good deed, and I decided to do it as well.
