7/20 cotopaxi to pueblo

Today we had 35 miles of climbing before our last big descent of 45 miles into Pueblo. We covered over 80 miles, 87 total for the day. That put us at our highest-mileage day. A couple of miles after we began our day we stumbled upon two miles of hard packed gravel road. That stuff makes it difficult to bike.

We were eager to make it to Pueblo early because Kayla's uncle, Stan, would be coming down to Pueblo from Boulder to have dinner with us. We had a long day ahead, and it was hot. Since we were coming out of the mountains it just kept getting hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter. The day was so long and so hot that we actually ran pretty low on water. I gave Kayla some of mine because she ran out, so for the last part of the day I didn't drink as much as I would have liked. As we approached the town, I wasn't drinking much, because I didn't have much, because I didn't want to run out, and also because I didn't want hot water, I needed something cold to drink.

When we arrived into Pueblo, we didn't see a gas station or a store until we got further into town; we had to search one out. We were hot and thirsty, and annoyed that we couldn't find a gas station.

Stan, thank you for coming down and joining us. Thank you for dinner, and thank you for taking an interest in our trip. Oh and thanks for letting us know about the weather up ahead, I was relieved to hear that we would be faced with cross winds the next few days; unfortunately, they are not as good as tailwinds, but they are much better than headwinds, so I'll take it.

Later, we were searching for a place to stay, and as we rode out bikes down the street, someone rolled down a window and told me that they had seen us 70 miles earlier that day, at Westcliff. Eventually they offered us a place to stay, at their house. Jake and Kate housed us. When we arrived at their house they told us that we were welcome to sleep inside, we were told that they were convinced we were not "ax murderers". We had already begun setting up our tent so we slept outside. Thank you guys for the compliment and thank you for the hospitality. They had an adorable baby and a friendly dog, AWESOME.
